EVOLVING LEGENDS

PRE-ALPHA ·PLAYS IN YOUR BROWSER

Build the world. Write the story. Play together.

A retro RPG you build in your browser and play with friends. Paint a map, write a quest, make a hero — then walk her into worlds other people made. No downloads, no code, free.

THE GAME

What is Evolving Legends?

Make a dungeon in an evening or a kingdom over a year — it is your pace. Paint the map, put people on it, tell them what to say, and hand your friends the link. Or skip all that and go play what other folks made. Either way it is the same world, and it gets bigger every time somebody builds.

ONE HERO, EVERY WORLD

Make your character once. Her name, her look, her level, her bag and her journal go with her from your friend's dungeon into a stranger's kingdom.

NOTHING TO INSTALL

Open a tab and you are in. No launcher, no download, no update night.

BITE-SIZED CREATION

Paint a map, place a character, write what they say, decide what happens when the player touches the chest. Each piece is small; the world is not.

YOUR OWN ART AND MUSIC

Upload pixel art, tilesets, character sheets and sound — MIDI included. Every account starts with a free set to build with.

SOLO OR CO-OP

Play alone, or form a party, chat, and walk the same map together in any world its author has shared.

THE EDITOR AND THE GAME — ONE TAB

The map editor with a play-test open over it, in the same browser tab: the hero stands beside a pond painted a minute earlier.

LIZARD: Every tile here was placed by a player. The editor runs where the game does — your browser.

WHAT WORKS TODAY

Everything here is real

  1. THE TITLE SCREEN

The title screen: a sunrise over a valley, the menu open on Continue with the hero's name and world under it.

    Start at the title screen

Music, a menu, and your last save one keypress away. Works with a keyboard or a gamepad.

    Play

  2. THE FORGE

The Forge at a forest camp: the Appearance step, a hooded hero standing by the fire with two looks to choose from.

    Make your hero

Pick an origin and a vocation, choose a look, give her a name. The Forge shows you the sprite that will actually walk the map.

    Make your hero

  3. THE MAP EDITOR

The map editor: the Pond brush picked in the Tiles panel, and a pond with finished banks painted into the meadow.

    Paint a world

Brushes that draw the edges for you, a tileset panel that never scrolls sideways, and Ctrl+Enter to stand in what you just painted.

    Start building

  4. EVENTS

An event called The old door: if the hero has the Old Iron Key, one line of text and the key is taken; otherwise, another line.

    Tell them what happens

Events are a list of steps — show text, if the player has the key, open the door. Turn a list into a cutscene with one switch.

    How a map works

  5. THE CHRONICLE

The Chronicle open on Inventory over the game: healing potions and travel bread, with the potion's description beside them.

    Open the Chronicle

Your bag, your gear, your skills and your journal, in a book you can open in any world. What you picked up here is still in your pocket there.

    Make your hero

  6. A SHARED WORLD

Two heroes in a party standing together at a crossroads, their chat open in the corner.

    Bring friends

Form a party, talk in chat, and see each other walk the same map when the world's author has shared it.

ROADMAP

Where we are

Pre-alpha means the game works and we are still building big pieces of it. Here is what that means this season.

Done

  • Done: The engine and the map editor
  • Done: Your own art and music
  • Done: The Forge and the Chronicle
  • Done: Quests and cutscenes
  • Done: Party chat and shared worlds

Now

  • To do: Alpha playtesting: a starting town to meet in, and the rough edges testers find

Next

  • To do: Battles
  • To do: The world grows from that starting town outward
